During the Cold War, an
MI6 agent, Lorraine Broughton, investigates in Berlin the death of a fellow
agent and on the search for a list of Double agents.
I
felt like I was back in my Film class watching this movie. I thoroughly
enjoyed all the different aspects in the film: cinematography, soundtrack,
editing, fight choreography, acting, and storyline. 'Atomic Blonde' might be my
favorite film so far of 2017.
The film used several
aesthetically pleasing wide shots. Jonathan Sela(DP) worked on several
Music videos such as Miley Cyrus's 'Wreaking Ball', Beyonce's 'Dance for you',
Katy Perry ft. Kanye West: E.T, and etc. The film looks like you were watching
a music video, especially the color and scene shots.
The
music added to the music video vibe. They had an arrange of different
music genre, but all seem to fit well together into the film. The
Composer, Tyler Bates, worked on films like Guardians of the Galaxy films, TV
shows like Samurai Jack. They used creative ways to use Diegetic sound
and Non-Diegetic sound. Non-Diegetic sound means when you hear a music or
sound that seemed add on top of the scene. Whenever you see a character walking
and you hear loud music play as travel, that's Non-Diegetic. Diegetic sound is
when the sound is from the inside of the film's world, like if you see a police
car pass, the sirens are Diegetic sound. These techniques are almost always use
in films. The fun part is when the filmmakers used those in creative ways. In
'Atomic Blonde' it was enjoyable and help with the tone of the film as you hear
a song blast as Non-Diegetic, then changed to Diegetic as the song is being
played from the radio as a car door opens. Especially in the beginning, it helped
changed the tone of the scene.
In
the beginning, I wasn't sure about going from flashback to the present debrief
meeting, but I got use to it as the film progressed and it help create comic
relief and interesting plot points. The Video effects of the spray paint
for location and time added a charm to the film since the film takes place
during the Cold War. Some transitions were creative and unexpected which
was nice to watch.
The Director,
David Leitch, has experience in acting and other productive parts in filmmaker;
along with doing stunts for several films for example, Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtle, Jupiter Ascending, Speed Racer, and etc. Leitch’s stunt experience shine through the
amazing fight scenes, along with using any object they see to use in a fight
which leads to pretty bloody or brutal scenes. During a long fight, the realism
sits in as you see the characters’ exhaustion from the fighting and the pain
from the injures.
The Actors did an amazing job in ‘Atomic Blonde’. Charlize
Theron looked amazing and she even did her own fight scenes. James McAvoy’s character was interesting, he’s
acting made me question his character’s motivation. All the minor characters had their charm like
the Watchman, Spyglass, and the guy who helps Lorraine by gathering
supplies. John Goodman has a place in my
heart and childhood and he doesn’t disappoint with his performance in this
film~
I really enjoyed the secret agent spy plot and Lorraine
using her intelligence and strength to survive.
Not to ruin anything, Lorraine explains to her superiors what happen
during her mission and when the meeting ends, I thought that was when the film
would end, but I was wrong. I wasn’t
sure what would happen, but I thoroughly enjoyed the last several minutes of
the film. In figuring out the plot, it is quite a simply
story with a deeper story and motivate as you think more about the character’s
actions and scenes.
Highly recommend ‘Atomic
Blonde’. I want to watch it again. I hope it wins some awards at the Oscars and other Film Awards.
