I finished Pokemon Moon during the month of November, and in my opinion, my favorite story plot so far in the Pokemon series. It had an interesting Story plot and lots of Character development. The game also has tons of new features in the game that was fun and helpful. I'll talk about the different subjects that I enjoy in the game, so beware of spoilers if you haven't finish the game.
Characters:
I always enjoyed the rivals and friend trainers in the past Pokemon games, but we only see a couple of them have back story explored and see them grow like N, Cheren, and etc. Moon and Sun have three characters that we get to see their back story and see them grow in some ways or they influence each other.
Hau, the happy-go-lucky guy who wants to have a good time with his friends and Pokemon. It seemed like he would be your rival, but he chooses the Pokemon type that is weaker to your Starter Pokemon. He is the Friend that enjoys making memorial memories. His Cheerful Personality spreads to other people, even to Gladion. His background is that he is the grandson of the 1st Island Kahuna and his goal is to defeat his Grandpa. Trying to get out of his Grandfather's shadow and become his own person. He truly cares for his friends and gets serious when bad events occur, like saving Lillie.
Gladion, the mysterious guy who join Team Skull, but isn't really considered a member. He warns you to make sure no one takes Nebby and it made me think that he could be involved with Lillie in someway. Gladion is hard on himself and tries to become strong to beat you. At first, he thought he doesn't need friends or help, but as the story progress and interacting with Hau, he learns that having someone to rely on is nice. He leaves the Aether Foundation to get away from his Mom, but in the end he comes back to the place he hates to help run it. He truly changes with the help of you, Hau, and Lillie.
Lillie, probably my favorite Character of the Pokemon series. From the beginning of the game, she doesn't like to watch Pokemon battle; but, through you and Hau she sees that battling helps Pokemon and Trainers grow together. She is super sweet and her character development moved me. Through her life, her Mother always decides for her on everything. When she finds out her Mother's plan to hurt Nebby, she gains the courage to go against her Mother.
Story Plot:
I truly enjoyed the Trails you go through in order to obtain Z-Crystals. The Trails are different types of games that end up with you fighting a Pokemon sometimes. At the end, you battle the Island's Kahuna who are sort of like the Island's Gym Leader in a way. As you journey through your adventure, you find out more about Team Skull and you visit the Aether Foundation. I didn't fully trust Aether Foundation since the beginning cutscene with Lille. You meet the Founder, Lusamine, and she seem to have good intentions for caring for all the Pokemon. Once you meet an Ultra Beast from a different dimension, Lusamine's personality switches and my suspicious were correct. Once Lillie goes with Team Skull, you see that Gladion is more concern about her and Nebby. Which helps with my theory that Gladion is Lillie's brother (which I was right~).
You arrived at the Aether Foundation and battle your way to Lillie and Lusamine. You see that Team Skull is actually working with Lusamine. Lillie and Gladion try to save their Mother and warn her about the destruction she's about to release. Lusamine doesn't listen to them and says hurtful things (It hurt meT^T).
Lusamine and Guzma, head of Team Skull, travel to the other dimension. You're able to take a break from all the Story Plot tension. Next day, you wake up to see Lillie changed in a different style (which is adorable). She tells you how you showed her strength and that she wants to be strong in order to save Nebby and her mother. That moment truly touched my heart! She even has her own Z-Move to help give her strength! She is too precious!
You travel with Lillie to locate the Legendary Pokemon and once you travel to the other dimension, you reunite with Lusamine. Lillie's attitude totally changed as she gives her mother a stern talk to about her actions. You fight against Lusamine who fuses with an Ultra Beast (who looks like Lillie's first outfit).
After that, you are transferred back to the normal world. Lillie takes care of her mother while you battle the finally built Pokemon League. After becoming the Champion, there is a cute scene where you celebrate your victory with all the Trail Captains and Kahunas, Family, and Friends. You sneak away with Lillie to see Tapu Koko, who is the one who gave you the Z-Wristband in the beginning. You cross the bridge where you first meet Lillie and Nebby. Lillie makes a comment about that then you are given the opportunity to capture Tapu Koko.
Afterwards, you rejoin the party to see fireworks going on. The Next day, you find out that Lillie has decided to go to the Kanto Region for her Mother. She also decides to leave to become a strong Pokemon Trainer just like you!(Crying moment^T)
The story ends with you waving goodbye to Lillie as she sails away. The ending credits occurs, which are cute pictures of the characters and a picture with you, Hau, and Lillie. The ending picture is Lillie hugging the Legendary Pokemon of your game choice.
Through the game, you find out how Professor Kukui and Guzma started their Island Challenge. They couldn't become an Island Captain, so they choose different paths. You see that Guzma becomes bad since he couldn't become a Captain. He has a reason on why he's on the bad side. Also, another Team Skull Admin member, Plumeria cares for the other members like an Older sister. As she battles you, she also changes because of you and decides that Team Skull should help the people and Pokemon they did wrong.
This game is just having so many Character Development which made me so happy!
Love the Post-Game Story where you help Looker and Anabel search for the Ultra Beast that appeared after you return from the Other Dimension.
I really enjoyed the new Pokemon interaction where you can heal your Pokemon's status, so you don't have to waste your items~
I have a theory on who your True Rival:
First, after you defeat the Elite Four, you battle against Professor Kukui to claim the Champion title. Kukui fights with the Starter Pokemon that your Starter is weak against. I choose Rowlet which final form is Decidueye, Kukui battled with Incineroar. So I feel like Kukui could be your actually Rival.
Second, Lillie. The only reason I think she could be your rival, the Z-move she showed you is the same Z-move for Incineroar's Z-move. This theory only works if her Z-move is different depending on your Starter Pokemon.
Third, Gladion. I just think he could be it since he recurrently battles you to prove his strength. Also, he battles with Null which has the ability to be different types, so maybe??
Overall, the game was really fun to play with cool cutscenes and features to explore. The Animation of the game kind of reminds me of Harvest Moon games. One of the Captain's face looks like a Harvest Moon Character to me! Check out the recent Harvest Moon games to check it out.
The Story really moved me as it shows different topics through the game. Family, through Lusamine, Lillie, and Gladion. Lusamine wants to become a Mother to all Pokemon, but she isn't a good mother to her actual children. Friendship as Lillie and Nebby try to protect each other and seeing the friendship that you show them. Growing as a person, as Lillie learns to become her own person and to take matters in her own hands.
Pokemon Sun and Moon, best Pokemon Game so far in my book for Story Plot, Character Development, and Emotions!
