A
sequel to the beloved puzzle game, Professor Layton series, 'Layton's
Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy' focuses on
Professor Layton's daughter, Katrielle, as she starts her own detective agency
to solve the mystery of the world, and to also find her lost father, Hershel
Layton.
It's been 3 years since the
last Professor Layton game been released, not including the spin-offs. For more
information of the Professor Layton game series please check out my post about
it: Professor
Layton: Perfect Game Series for Puzzle Lovers
For a short description, Layton
series are well known for solving interesting puzzles and mysteries for gameplay.
It's a fun game if you like puzzles or relaxing, but still interesting story
lines.
'Layton's Mystery Journey:
Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy' takes place chronically after
'Professor Layton and the Unwound Future' and it's not stated how many years
has past since then; the only clues are how London or the characters has change
since the last game. In the opening of 'Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and
the Millionaires' Conspiracy', Katrielle has a dream when she was younger about
her father. She is 21 years old when the game takes place, and it's not
really been said how long her father's been missing.
The game has the same art style
from the previous games with some new gameplay in solving the cases. The
elements that I love about the Professor Layton series are still incorporated
in 'Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy' which
I love. The artwork, puzzles, soundtrack, and story plot are all there with
more elements to love in this new game. They also include the fun puns they you
should recognize~
Katrielle has the help of her
assistant, Ernest Greeves, and a talking dog Sherl to help her solve the
mysteries of the Seven Dragons, seven Millionaires of London. Reoccurring
characters with Inspector Hastings and Profiler Analyst/Katrielle's rival,
Emiliana Perfetti. Like the other Professor Layton games, you will see the same
background characters as you progress the game.
At a point in the game, you can
choose the order of certain cases you can investigate. You can also stop one
case and start a different one if you feel like it. I like doing things in
order, so I played in the order the cases were displayed on the case board in
the Layton Detective Agency. As you find out more information about a case, you
receive a puzzle piece that represents the information you learned. Once you
find all 6 pieces, you can solve the case. Another fun thing you can do is
redecorate the office and change Katrielle's outfit throughout the game.
I read an interview article of
Akihiro Hino, President and CEO of LEVEL-5; he discussed how since the previous
games had upscale mysteries, and that it would be weird if they place Professor
Layton in solving smaller scale puzzles in London. They also use a female protagonist
since the audiences have a high percentage of female players. That is the
origin of Katrielle Layton, as she starts out solving smaller scale mysteries
and hopefully involve to larger scales as the series progress.
To help promote 'Layton's Mystery
Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy', there is an online game
where you solve puzzles from around the world. Promotion of the game comes with
puzzles that fans can solve and can win some prizes where you can transfer it
to the actually game. The website has their own little story plot going on as
well, so if interested please check it out: https://layton.world/top.html
You can also buy the mobile version of 'Layton's Mystery Journey:
Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy'.

Spoiler Alert(Maybe)
Akihiro Hino isn't sure if they
will continue with Katrielle Layton's story in future games. I hope they do
since there are questions that haven't been answered in my opinion in this
game. We haven't figured out the background story of Sherl, he's a talking dog
where only a few people can understand him. Sherl has amnesia and is the first
client of Katrielle to help figure out who he really is, which isn't answered
in this game. When I first heard that Professor Layton has gone missing,
I thought this game would have Katrielle actually on the search for him.
Layton's name is mention a couple of times from several characters, but it was
only a short mention till Katrielle change the subject. Also, in the very end
of the game, Katrielle wants to search for Layton to let him know that she
solved his puzzle on who she is, which clarifies that like many other
characters in the previous Layton series, Katrielle is another child that
Layton has adopted. I want to who Katrielle's real parents are and see more of
her interaction with Layton. I want to see Luke and Emmy and other characters
to see what they are up too.
It was nice to visit
Gressenheller University and the Dean from previous Layton games. Gressenheller
University is the university that Professor Layton taught archeology. It was
nostalgic to be able to see the school again~

I really hope they will
continue the Lady Layton series and follow Katrielle's story as she solves
mystery of London and on the search for Professor Layton.
