I finally
watched 'From Up On Poppy Hill' after so many years of owning the DVD. I regret
not watching it sooner, it's such a nice film you can enjoy with your family. I
throughly enjoyed all aspects of the film: story, characters, music, and
art. I enjoyed a lot of the Ghibli films, but this is one of my top
favorite Ghibli movies~
Miyazaki Gorou directs
‘From Up On Poppy Hill’ with realism feel to it while having similar traits as
his father, Miyazaki Hayao with relatable characters and lively
places. The Clubhouse that the students fight to preserve reminded
me of the bathhouse in ‘Spirited Away’. Entering the Clubhouse felt like
transferring to another world. The place gives off a similar feel to Ghibli
films in traveling to a different world. Along with the interesting
characters involve with the various clubs. It felt magical and lively compared
to the outside reality. Miyazaki Gorou directs ‘From Up On Poppy
Hill’ with realism feel to it while having similar traits as his father with

One of the
main things I love about Ghibli films is the attention to small detail in the
animation and characters' movement. I love the small movements between Shun and
Umi on how they show interest in one another. Little things that makes you
think a little outside of the storyline you see. I enjoyed the light atmosphere
of the film while showing the affects by the war like Shun’s family origin and
Umi’s father.
I always
enjoyed the interaction between the main characters in Ghibli films, and 'From
Up On Poppy Hill' has the same type of romance I really love watching. The
small, pure, and realistic interaction between the main characters that makes
me squeal~
Ghibli never
disappoints me in their music soundtrack. I really enjoyed the upbeat
soundtrack in ‘From Up On Poppy Hill. The music represents the time the film
takes place especially the famous song, “Sukiyaki” which reminded me of my time
studying Japanese since my teacher introduced that song; when there were
singing competition for Japanese Language Students, “Sukiyaki” was at least
sung by one or two people.
During the
film, it was confusing since people would address Umi as another name. It
sounded like they were calling her 'Meru', which is 'Mer' another word for
'sea' since 'Umi' is sea/ocean in Japanese. There are a few French words used
such as the club house called Quartier Latin refers to Latin Quarter in Paris.
Also the title, which suppose to be Coquelicot Hill. The hill that Umi's house
lives on; 'coquelicot' the French word for 'poppy'. They only used Umi in the
subtitles instead of using Mer also, probably to reduced confusion from the
audience.
Even though
Shun lives near the Harbor, how come he was in Umi's neighborhood when she
needed to quickly buy meat for dinner. When they said goodbye, he went a
different direction from when he 'seem' to be going home. He could have gone
another route, or he was looking around the neighborhood for the person who
raised the flags that he would see from his dad's boat.
Small fact,
if you're a fan of Johnny's Entertainment, V6's Okada Junichi voices Shun! He
worked with Miyazaki Gorou before, this being his second time. I was excited
when I saw his name because I'm a fan of Johnny's Entertainment, especially
Arashi and NEWS~
