Based
on “The Chinaman” by Stephen Leather, Quan seeks vengeance as a politically
motivated terrorism destroys his peaceful life. Quan relentlessly searches for
the people responsible as the British Police and an Irish Politician pushes
pressure in searching for the rogue terrorists.
Jackie Chan plays Quan in this action-thriller film, ‘The
Foreigner’. He brings his fighting style and strategy to the film along with
punching me with the feels. Jackie Chan’s powerful performance and emotion
moved me to tears. Even though it’s a serious film, there are some small action
comedy that Jackie Chan brings to the screen. Pierce Brosnan joins the cast as
Liam Hennessy, an Irish Politician whose caught in the crossfire of his career
and past.
‘The Foreigner’ is the director, Martin Campbell, first film
in six years. His last film before ‘The Foreigner’ was ‘Green Lantern’ (2011).
He also directed films as ‘Casino Royale’, ‘GoldenEye’, and ‘The Mask of
Zorro’. The Cinematographer, David Tattersall, also worked on the live action
‘Death Note’ (2017) and the prequels of the Star Wars trilogy. He even worked
on the live action of Speed Racer. The cinematography’s style of ‘The
Foreigner’ was different compared to the other Tattersall’s works in my
opinion. The Editor, Angela M. Catanzaro, has a background in TV series. ‘The
Foreigner’ being one of the few films she worked on. The only thing about the
editing that sort of felt weird was the transitions to Quan’s flashbacks.
Another thing, the soundtrack from the film and the trailer played different
genres, but the soundtrack still worked well with the atmosphere of the
film.
I enjoyed the various characters and how some of the
characters intertwined through the film. Adapted from the book, “The Chinaman” (1992),
the characters would refer to Quan by the title. The film shows how the fight
between the British and the Irish, and how it affects a family of a Chinese Born-British
citizen leading to him to take charge in stopping the madness with his own
power. I would watch this film again~
=========================Spoilers Maybe==============================
The film portrays the lesson on how you
are responsible for your actions. Liam Hennessy had a goal, but his actions to
reach his goal falls apart and gets out of hand. He tries to correct it, but faces
pressure from Quan and the British Police to find the people responsible for
the recent bombing. Even though Liam has good intentions in searching for the
people who killed innocent people, his decisions catch up with him and leads to
his downfall.
